{"id":1864,"date":"2024-03-18T15:48:58","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T15:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=1864"},"modified":"2024-03-18T15:50:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T15:50:59","slug":"new-academic-survey-hopes-to-uncover-hobby-board-gamer-motivations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/18\/new-academic-survey-hopes-to-uncover-hobby-board-gamer-motivations\/","title":{"rendered":"New academic survey hopes to uncover hobby board gamer motivations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new academic survey aimed at digging into the motivations of hobby board gamers has been launched by strategy and wargaming blog and podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armchairdragoons.com\/\">The Armchair Dragoons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey comes almost 20 years after The Armchair Dragoons ran a similar exercise, collating data from more than 3,500 respondents and producing several papers based the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That survey aimed to uncover what players like in a game and why, what motivates them to continued play and game preferences, why games are bought and what influences those decisions, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those results have been used to create papers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armchairdragoons.com\/articles\/research\/motivations-of-hobby-game-players\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motivations of Hobby Game Players<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/etd.ohiolink.edu\/acprod\/odb_etd\/etd\/r\/1501\/10?clear=10&amp;p10_accession_num=osu1407511305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why do we play? A content analytic exploration of gaming motivations from a uses and gratifications perspective<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Gamesurvey.org\" title=\"\">The new survey<\/a> is being run in partnership with Dr Ian Mercer of Fairleigh Dickinson University &#8211; a life-long gamer himself &#8211; and will use the institution&#8217;s survey tools to gather the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survey creator and Armchair Dragoons &#8216;Regimental Commander&#8217; Brant\u00a0Guillory said, &#8220;It\u2019s been almost 20 years since that original survey, and plenty of things have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There have been new categories of games developed (such as living card games) and significant changes in the hobby gaming audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic changed the ways in which people connected to play, and some of those changes have stuck even post-pandemic.
