{"id":2687,"date":"2024-07-19T11:20:15","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T10:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=2687"},"modified":"2024-07-19T11:27:48","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T10:27:48","slug":"kickstarters-new-head-of-games-is-ex-exploding-kittens-greater-than-games-sales-specialist-maggie-clayton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/19\/kickstarters-new-head-of-games-is-ex-exploding-kittens-greater-than-games-sales-specialist-maggie-clayton\/","title":{"rendered":"Kickstarter&#8217;s new head of games is ex-Exploding Kittens, Greater than Games sales specialist Maggie Clayton"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kickstarter has named Exploding Kittens Inc&#8217;s senior sales manager Maggie Clayton as its new head of games, as the crowdfunding giant continues its battle against tabletop-focused competitors Gamefound and BackerKit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clayton spent almost three years at Exploding Kittens as senior sales manager and North American sales manager, following a four-year stint working in sales and marketing at tabletop publishers Greater Than Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She replaces Jon Ritter-Roderick, who will lead creator strategy on the new Kickstarter Performance team after two years as head of games &#8211; one of the crowdfunding heavyweight&#8217;s biggest categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter highlighted Clayton&#8217;s expertise working with both large and small publishers across mass market, specialty, and distribution sales, as well as product development and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clayton&#8217;s hire <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/25\/gamefound-turns-up-heat-on-kickstarter-after-scoring-2023s-biggest-tabletop-fundraise-half-of-the-years-top-10-most-funded-board-game-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">comes amid rising pressure on Kickstarter from new competitors in the tabletop crowdfunding space<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamefound, which began life as a Kickstarter pledge manager in 2015, has emerged as a major player since transitioning to the medium in 2022 &#8211; with Kickstarter&#8217;s own revenues in the sector dropping in both years since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24054381\/kickstarter-top-10-biggest-most-backed-board-games-campaigns-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according to data supplied to Polygon by Tabletop Analytics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter declined to provide Polygon with annual revenue data this year for the first time in almost a decade, but Tabletop Analytics&#8217; data showed its tabletop revenue falling from a record $270m in 2021 to about $226m last year &#8211; a drop of more than 16%, following seven years of consecutive revenue rises from 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite that continued drop, 2023&#8217;s figure from Tabletop Analytics remains well above the $176.3m revealed by Kickstarter as its 2019 revenue &#8211; the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns caused a temporary surge in tabletop game purchases across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter has not commented on the accuracy of the 2023 figures, but Polygon said its analysis of Tabletop Analytics&#8217; historical data found that it had always closely matched Kickstarter&#8217;s publicly released numbers in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter has said that it saw a 17% increase in the number of successful projects in 2023, and a 14% increase in the number of games projects launched compared to 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamefound scored the biggest tabletop fundraising campaign of 2023 with sci-fi survival horror game Nemesis\u2019 standalone expansion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/awaken-realms\/nemesis-retaliation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Nemesis: Retaliation raising more than $12.1m<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the third biggest board game crowdfunding campaign of all time behind\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/frosthaven\/frosthaven\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Frosthaven<\/a>\u00a0($12.9m) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/poots\/kingdom-death-monster-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kingdom Death Monster 1.5<\/a>\u00a0($12.3m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamefound also proved it had strength in depth by scoring five of the top 10 most-funded board games of the year. They included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/go-on-board\/the-witcher-path-of-destiny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Witcher: Path of Destiny<\/a>\u00a0($6.4m),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/awaken-realms\/stalker-the-boardgame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">S.T.A.L.K.E.R The Board Game<\/a>\u00a0($4.7m) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/chip-theory-games\/the-elder-scrolls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal Of The Second Era<\/a>\u00a0($4.6m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter scored big raises of its own with games including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/cgl\/battletech-mercenaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Battletech: Mercenaries<\/a>\u00a0($7.5m), but was kept from holding all of the remaining five slots of the top ten\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/18\/kickstarter-rival-backerkit-follows-4bn-gloomhaven-campaign-success-with-official-launch-from-beta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">by BackerKit\u2019s Gloomhaven Grand Festival campaign<\/a>\u00a0($5.5m) \u2013 a powerful early success for the new platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major blow for Kickstarter&#8217;s tabletop revenue came in February this year, when board game crowdfunding major CMON <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24074262\/cmon-gamefound-exclusivity-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">signed an exclusivity deal with Gamefound<\/a> after 12 years of running Kickstarter projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CMON launched four Kickstarter projects last year representing about $11.9m, with its biggest successes comprising Marvel United: Multiverse at $4.8m, Zombicide: White Death at $3.8m and DCeased \u2013 A Zombicide Game at $2.6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other former Kickstarter-using publishers which have since launched campaigns on Gamefound include <a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/matagot\/kemet-rise-of-the-gods?ref=explore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Matagot<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/chip-theory-games\/tanglewoods?ref=explore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Chip Theory Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Yulman, Kickstarter&#8217;s director of outreach, said, &#8220;Maggie\u2019s deep industry experience and respected standing make her an ideal leader for our games team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Her background in marketing and sales at Exploding Kittens, and her collaborations with indie creators at Greater Than Games, give her a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to bring games to life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s striking how beloved she is in the industry \u2013 experienced creators and former colleagues have all sung her praises.
