{"id":3611,"date":"2025-01-14T14:47:43","date_gmt":"2025-01-14T14:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=3611"},"modified":"2025-01-14T14:47:43","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T14:47:43","slug":"maldito-games-agrees-sale-to-devir-after-business-tasks-become-a-burden-for-former-owner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/14\/maldito-games-agrees-sale-to-devir-after-business-tasks-become-a-burden-for-former-owner\/","title":{"rendered":"Maldito Games agrees sale to Devir after business tasks &#8216;become a burden&#8217; for former owner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devirgames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Devir Games<\/a> has agreed to buy Spanish board game publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malditogames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Maldito Games<\/a>, adding its portfolio of &#8216;expert-level&#8217; localisations including <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/167791\/terraforming-mars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Terraforming Mars<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/342942\/ark-nova\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ark Nova<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/224517\/brass-birmingham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Brass Birmingham<\/a> to its catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devir said it would continue to publish games under the Maldito brand following the acquisition, and would transfer some of its own &#8216;expert&#8217; games to the arm, having been looking for a way to better categorise its catalogue &#8220;for some time&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sale process was instigated by Maldito rather than Devir, however, with the former&#8217;s general manager Francisco \u00c1lamo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-MiGkJ3AOKQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">telling Spanish board game reviewer and Twitch streamer Mishi Geek<\/a> that the growth of the company had forced him to focus on business tasks such as payroll management and finance over hunting for games to publish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maldito currently employs about 30 people including \u00c1lamo, who plans to stay on as editor in chief of the business following the acquisition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devir, which began life as a Brazilian comic book distributor in 1987, launched its own board game operation as a Spanish publisher in 2000 before gradually expanding the business out to Latin America. The company began bringing English language versions of its games to the US in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devir said Maldito has games in its catalogue with a sales potential &#8220;far superior to what it can currently achieve&#8221;, which it plans to market more heavily and bring to new customers, especially through its Latin American arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"547\" src=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito-1024x547.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito-1024x547.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito-768x410.jpg 768w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito-1536x820.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Alamo-Devir-Maldito.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Francisco \u00c1lamo, left, speaks with Devir&#8217;s Xavi Garriga (centre) and Benja Amor\u00edn (right) about the Maldito acquisition during a Christmas video announcement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A statement from Devir said, &#8220;When you make your hobby first a job and then a business, suddenly you find yourself talking to banks, negotiating salaries, chasing containers and arguing with transporters, instead of doing what you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;\u00c1lamo is an excellent publisher and will continue to be so for Maldito as it has been up to now.
