{"id":4023,"date":"2025-02-27T14:06:35","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T14:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=4023"},"modified":"2025-03-12T14:07:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T14:07:42","slug":"odin-wins-this-years-as-dor-frances-biggest-board-gaming-award-while-kutna-hora-takes-expert-game-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/27\/odin-wins-this-years-as-dor-frances-biggest-board-gaming-award-while-kutna-hora-takes-expert-game-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Odin wins this year&#8217;s As d&#8217;Or, France\u2019s biggest board gaming award, while Kutn\u00e1 Hora takes expert game prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Viking-themed card shedding game <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/406854\/odin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Odin<\/a> has won this year&#8217;s As d&#8217;Or,\u00a0France&#8217;s highest-profile board game prize, after fighting off strong competition from <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/393325\/captain-flip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Captain Flip<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/431248\/for-a-crown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">For A Crown<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City-building eurogame <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/385610\/kutna-hora-the-city-of-silver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/385610\/kutna-hora-the-city-of-silver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kutn\u00e1 Hora<\/a><\/a> triumphed in the Expert Game category at the 2025 awards, while Operation Noisettes won the children&#8217;s game prize and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/423787\/behind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Behind<\/a> scooped the \u201cIniti\u00e9\u201d award, which targets regular board game players ready for more challenging mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Odin, from South Korean designers Yohan Goh, Hope Hwang and Gary Kim, marks the first As d&#8217;Or win for Switzerland-based publisher Helvetiq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The win came hot on the heels of Odin picking up second place in the family games segment of the Swiss Gamers Award, with PlayPunk-published Captain Flip beating it to the top prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goh, Hwang and Kim previously worked together on 2022&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/371787\/cradle-to-grave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Cradle to Grave<\/a>, published by South Korea&#8217;s Bloom Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Odin marks the second time Kim has seen one of his game&#8217;s nominated for the As d&#8217;Or, after his 2011 design Royal Turtle picked up a nod when it was released in France as <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/130176\/tales-and-games-the-hare-and-the-tortoise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Tales &amp; Games: The Hare &amp; the Tortoise<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hwang has previously scored design success with Alderac-published <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/132372\/guildhall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Guildhall<\/a>, which scored a recommendation by the Spiel des Jahres jury, and 2018-release <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/248005\/ganymede\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ganymede<\/a>, while Goh&#8217;s other designs include <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/206844\/fold-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Fold It!<\/a> and the Vincent Dutrait-illustrated <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/264797\/kushi-express\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kushi Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helvetiq has put out a host of small box card games since releasing Kariba and Zen Master in 2010, including 2016&#8217;s Bandido and Reiner Knizia design Art Robbery in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kutna Hora&#8217;s triumph in the expert category <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/30\/this-years-nominees-for-frances-biggest-board-gaming-award-highlights-breadth-of-countrys-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">in this year&#8217;s As d&#8217;Or<\/a> is the game&#8217;s first award win, having previously picked up nominations for Golden Geek Heavy Game of the Year and Most Innovative Board Game in 2023, and the Complex Game award in the 2024 MinD-Spielepreis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game, designed by Ond\u0159ej Bystro\u0148, Petr \u010c\u00e1slava, Pavel Jarosch, is published by Czech Games Edition, with Iello acting as the publishing partner for the French market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The As d&#8217;Or traces its history back to 1988, when it was launched to highlight the best games available at France&#8217;s Festival International des Jeux in Cannes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award was merged with the Jeu de l&#8217;Ann\u00e9e in 2005.
