{"id":4577,"date":"2025-06-06T14:21:35","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=4577"},"modified":"2025-06-11T14:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T13:50:34","slug":"toy-retailers-pick-finspan-the-gang-and-trio-as-winners-of-this-years-astra-play-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/06\/toy-retailers-pick-finspan-the-gang-and-trio-as-winners-of-this-years-astra-play-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Toy retailers pick Finspan, The Gang and Trio as winners of this year&#8217;s Astra Play Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>American toy retailers from trade body <a href=\"https:\/\/astratoy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ASTRA<\/a> have named Finspan, The Gang and Trio as the board game winners of its latest annual Play Awards &#8211; which it says were created to highlight novel designs which are &#8220;thought provoking or groundbreaking&#8221; within the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finspan, the latest game in <a href=\"https:\/\/stonemaiergames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonemaier Games<\/a>&#8216; bestselling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/266192\/wingspan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wingspan<\/a>\u00a0trilogy, triumphed in this year&#8217;s Geek Games award, beating competition from fellow finalists Harmonies and Kronologic: Paris 1920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fish-themed design from David Gordon and Michael O&#8217;Connell <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/09\/finspan-reveal-briefly-crashes-stonemaier-games-website-as-players-flock-to-check-out-final-game-in-wingspan-trilogy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">briefly crashed Stonemaier Games&#8217; website when it was unveiled in January this year<\/a> as players flocked to learn more about the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASTRA&#8217;s Family Games award this year went to co-operative Texas Hold&#8217;em-based card game The Gang, which was up against Captain Flip from Paolo Mori and Remo Conzadori, and Nekojima by David Carmona and Karen Nguyen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gang was co-designed by highly-regarded game maker Kory Heath, who died in November last year, and John Cooper &#8211; the co-inventor of stackable pyramid pieces Looney Pyramids alongside Andrew Looney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the Gang, Heath was best known for his inductive logic game Zendo, a Mensa Select Award winner from 2005. BoardGameGeek\u2019s Eric Martin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blog\/1\/blogpost\/167622\/in-memoriam-kory-heath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published an extended tribute to Heath and his design work here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gang has picked up praise from across the board game industry since its release last year, and was a recommended title in <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/20\/flip-7-bomb-busters-krakel-orakel-to-battle-it-out-for-this-years-spiel-des-jahres-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">this year&#8217;s Spiel des Jahres award<\/a>, as well as picking up several nominations <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/08\/arcs-wins-big-in-2024-golden-geek-awards-seti-brings-home-pair-of-prizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">in the most recent Golden Geek Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s Family Party Games award was won by Kaya Miyano design Trio &#8211; a reimplementation of their 2015 game Slotters: Phantom Seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spiel des Jahres nominee Flip 7, designed by Eric Olsen, was a finalist in that award, as was Daniel Stoltenberg&#8217;s party deduction game Askalotl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finalists for the awards are chosen by a panel of committee member from ASTRA, a not-for-profit trade body which represents more than 1,800 toy industry retailers, manufacturers and sales representatives. Those finalists are then voted on by ASTRA retail members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year&#8217;s Geek Games award was won by Inside Job, while the 2024 Family Games prize went to 800 Pound Gorilla.
