{"id":6292,"date":"2026-03-20T11:14:26","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=6292"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:14:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:14:27","slug":"asmodee-makes-asia-expansion-push-by-buying-cmons-japon-brand-launching-new-studio-nekuma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/20\/asmodee-makes-asia-expansion-push-by-buying-cmons-japon-brand-launching-new-studio-nekuma\/","title":{"rendered":"Asmodee makes Asia expansion push by buying CMON&#8217;s Japon Brand, launching new studio Nekuma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?s=asmodee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Asmodee<\/a> has ramped up its reignited acquisition strategy by buying Japon Brand from <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?s=cmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">CMON<\/a>, anchoring the board game giant&#8217;s push into a &#8220;currently untapped market&#8221; for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japon Brand was instrumental in bringing Japanese designs such as Love Letter and Machi Koro to international markets, after being inspired by the surge in novel games from home-grown designers in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company will form the cornerstone of Asmodee&#8217;s new Japanese design studio, Nekuma, which will look to find games from local designers that it can release globally, as well as helping Asmodee bring its existing titles to Japanese players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler said, &#8220;Japan is one of the most creative and culturally influential markets in the world. net sales &#8211; covering every country outside of Europe or the Americas &#8211; made up less than 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asmodee currently has offices in South Korea, China and Taiwan following an expansion to the continent in 2021, with those teams having developed and published localised titles including Splendor Pok\u00e9mon, Love Letter Cookie Run, Pok\u00e9mon Chips, and Love Letter Fox Spirit, as well as making use of crowdfunding platforms across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said Nekuma would &#8220;integrate and expand&#8221; that activity under interim head of studio Frederic Nugeron, Asmodee&#8217;s current global senior vice president &#8211; route to market for the Asia Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said Nekuma would lead game sourcing &#8220;to identify and support the most promising Japanese and Asian tabletop game designers&#8221;, while Asia-focused publishing will be managed by the company&#8217;s existing Korea team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nugeron said, &#8220;Our ambition with Nekuma is very concrete: be present on the ground, listen to designers, understand cultural nuances, and build trusted relationships within the Japanese ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By combining local expertise with Asmodee\u2019s global reach, we can support creators more closely and bring distinctive Asian games to a worldwide audience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asmodee said Japon Brand would continue to operate with its existing expertise and relationships, with &#8220;no impact&#8221; on current partnerships or contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CMON Divestments Continue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The buyout <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/26\/cmon-buys-japon-brand-the-company-which-introduced-the-world-to-love-letter-and-machi-koro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">comes less than two years after board game crowdfunding major CMON acquired Japon Brand<\/a>, with a plan to keep it as an independent division that would use CMON\u2019s infrastructure and reach to help it introduce games to the global market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That investment followed a strong 2023 for CMON,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/17\/cmons-profits-soared-28-last-year-to-more-than-23m-thanks-to-huge-drop-in-costs\/\">in which its net profit jumped more than 35%<\/a>\u00a0amid a hefty drop in its sales-associated costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the company has faced a punishing financial situation since, posting losses of <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/30\/cmons-2024-losses-even-worse-than-it-predicted-at-over-3m-almost-double-its-profits-from-the-last-three-years-combined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$3m across 2024<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.hkexnews.hk\/listedco\/listconews\/sehk\/2025\/0828\/2025082802784.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly $7m<\/a>\u00a0for the first half of 2025 &#8211; figures which dwarf the overall $4.2m profit it had managed to make\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/21\/new-cmon-profit-warning-says-losses-could-reach-8m-for-first-half-of-2025-almost-three-times-its-overall-profit-from-the-last-ten-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over the previous nine years combined<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/24\/cmon-announces-layoffs-pauses-future-game-development-and-new-crowdfunding-due-to-us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laying off staff and halting new game development and campaign launches<\/a>, CMON has been attempting to recover by selling a string of its most lucrative IPs &#8211; including <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/10\/asmodee-buys-zombicide-ip-from-struggling-cmon-as-first-move-in-new-acquisition-spree\/\">its most famous and profitable title<\/a>,\u00a0Zombicide, and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/20\/asmodee-continues-push-into-crowdfunding-by-buying-cthulhu-death-may-die-series-from-struggling-cmon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cthulhu: Death May Die<\/a>, both of which were bought by Asmodee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asmodee continued its acquisitions of CMON games last month <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/20\/asmodee-continues-acquisition-of-cmon-titles-with-sheriff-of-nottingham-purchase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">by picking up bluffing and set collection game Sheriff of Nottingham<\/a>, which CMON had previously bought from <a href=\"https:\/\/icv2.com\/articles\/news\/view\/33890\/cmon-acquires-sheriff-nottingham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brazilian publisher Galapagos Jogos in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CMON-Zombicide-2nd-Edition-03-13-2025_01_54_PM-1024x504.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CMON-Zombicide-2nd-Edition-03-13-2025_01_54_PM-1024x504.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CMON-Zombicide-2nd-Edition-03-13-2025_01_54_PM-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CMON-Zombicide-2nd-Edition-03-13-2025_01_54_PM-768x378.jpg 768w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CMON-Zombicide-2nd-Edition-03-13-2025_01_54_PM.jpg 1276w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 2nd edition of former CMON title Zombicide, which is now owned by Asmodee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The board game giant <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/21\/acquisitions-are-back-at-asmodee-as-board-game-giant-eyes-more-than-20-buyout-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">announced in November 2024 that it was preparing to \u201creignite\u201d its strategy of buying up smaller board game publishers and distributors<\/a>, saying at the time that it had a pipeline of more than 20 acquisition opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the revived M&amp;A process is yet to fully mirror Asmodee&#8217;s private equity-fuelled buying spree from the latter half of the 2010s, during which it acquired more than 40 companies and IPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That heavy expansion included the company adding more than 20 game studios, including Days of Wonder, Fantasy Flight Games, Lookout Games, Catan Studio and Z-Man Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler was asked during the company\u2019s quarterly results presentation last month whether the company was ready to make &#8220;more meaningful&#8221; acquisitions rather than small bolt-on deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said in response, &#8220;Without being specific, the activity in the pipeline is in accordance with our plan. The smaller acquisitions are faster. IP acquisitions and asset deals are faster to execute.
