{"id":6431,"date":"2026-04-14T10:44:48","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T09:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=6431"},"modified":"2026-04-14T11:04:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T10:04:08","slug":"hot-streak-magical-athlete-race-to-wins-in-this-years-american-tabletop-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/14\/hot-streak-magical-athlete-race-to-wins-in-this-years-american-tabletop-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Hot Streak, Magical Athlete race to wins in this year&#8217;s American Tabletop Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The American Tabletop Awards, an awards scheme launched seven years ago with the aim of being the US equivalent of Germany\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/tag\/spiel-des-jahres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spiel des Jahres<\/a>, has unveiled its 2026 winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racing games published by <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?s=cmyk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">CMYK<\/a> triumphed in both the Early Gamers and Casual Games awards this year, with <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blog\/1\/blogpost\/178228\/designer-diary-magical-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Richard Garfield&#8217;s new implementation<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/24565\/magical-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Takashi Ishida&#8217;s 2003 design<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/454103\/magical-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Magical Athlete<\/a> scooping the former, and Jon Perry&#8217;s chaotic mascot racer <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/446497\/hot-streak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Hot Streak<\/a> the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATTA&#8217;s Early Gamers award is focused on titles suitable for younger gamers and players new to modern board gaming, while the Casual Games awards looks at games suitable for all experience levels that can be played in 30 to 60 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s Strategy Games prize went to Matt Leacock&#8217;s pandemic spinoff <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/436217\/the-lord-of-the-rings-fate-of-the-fellowship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship<\/a>, while the Complex Games title went to Jo Kelly&#8217;s and Cole Wehrle&#8217;s design <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/349750\/molly-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Molly House<\/a>, which explores the joy and fear experienced by gender-defying Londoners in 18th century society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CMYK was the standout publisher with two wins out of the four categories. Asmodee studios won one award and picked up three other nominations, while Flatout Games picked up recommendations for both <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/433007\/cascadia-junior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Cascadia Junior<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/421606\/knitting-circle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Knitting Circle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Cutler was the only designer to appear twice among the finalists, scoring a nomination for his co-design <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/393429\/critter-kitchen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Critter Kitchen<\/a> and a recommendation for co-design <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/431481\/a-place-for-all-my-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">A Place For All My Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/The-American-Tabletop-Awards-04-14-2026_11_03_AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6435\" style=\"width:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/The-American-Tabletop-Awards-04-14-2026_11_03_AM.png 368w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/The-American-Tabletop-Awards-04-14-2026_11_03_AM-300x267.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ATTAs are voted on by members of the US board game media, who each submit up to five games from the previous calendar year, which are then ordered according to ranked-choice vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATTA\u2019s committee includes <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?s=gama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">GAMA<\/a> president and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sahmreviews.com\/\">SAHMReviews.com<\/a>\u00a0founder and owner Nicole Brady, Jessica Fisher, the co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameosity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Gameosity<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/TabletopJobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Tabletop Game Jobs Facebook group<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/goodtimesociety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Good Time Society<\/a> pair Ruel Gaviola and Becca Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awards co-founder Eric Yurko, who runs board game review site <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsericplaying.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">What&#8217;s Eric Playing?<\/a>, said, &#8220;The past few years have been great for games, and 2025 was no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There were great moments and releases throughout, so we&#8217;re very excited to present these awards to the best games we played in 2025.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/09\/americas-answer-to-the-spiel-des-jahres-the-american-tabletop-awards-unveils-2025-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Last year\u2019s ATTA winners<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/393325\/captain-flip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Captain Flip<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/411567\/the-gang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Gang<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/368173\/lets-go-to-japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Let\u2019s Go!
