{"id":6632,"date":"2026-05-20T09:57:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T08:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=6632"},"modified":"2026-05-20T10:02:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T09:02:06","slug":"boardgamegeek-fires-veteran-advertising-manager-for-rejecting-campaign-due-to-firsthand-experiences-of-demonic-possession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/20\/boardgamegeek-fires-veteran-advertising-manager-for-rejecting-campaign-due-to-firsthand-experiences-of-demonic-possession\/","title":{"rendered":"BoardGameGeek fires veteran advertising manager for rejecting campaign due to firsthand experiences of demonic possession"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">BoardGameGeek<\/a> has fired advertising manager Chad Krizan after almost 20 years with the company, after he cited his personal experiences of demonic possession as grounds for rejecting an ad campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krizan told <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/470193\/possess-me-satan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Possess Me, Satan<\/a> publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/fallingwhalegames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Falling Whale Games<\/a> that he couldn&#8217;t &#8220;in good conscience&#8221; approve ads for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/dukes-of-nukes-gaming\/possess-me-satan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">its Gamefound campaign<\/a> as &#8220;the thought of displaying this subject matter makes me sick to my stomach&#8221;, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/boardgames\/comments\/1ti33vd\/tried_advertising_on_boardgamegeek_and_got_this\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">an email exchange shared online by the publisher<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the emails, Krizan says he has been &#8220;sitting on this one and praying about what to do in this instance&#8221;, adding that &#8220;as a follower of Jesus, I routinely help people suffering from demonic oppression, and more occasionally, possession, and it&#8217;s absolutely devastating the damage he does to peoples&#8217; lives&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krizan wrote, &#8220;IMO, the responsible thing to do would be to pull the entire project, as there are *way* more people that suffer this than you could possibly imagine, putting on a good face (usually enabled by dissociation), but suffering terribly behind the scenes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Falling Whale replied to question the decision to ban the game on religious grounds, and asking for confirmation of which BGG advertising policy they were breaking, Krizan responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Keep in mind it&#8217;s not over religion, but reality. It&#8217;s the same reason I would say a game would be in very poor taste if it featured being a sexual predator, or something that would directly trigger someone that&#8217;s been harmed by the subject matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about keeping BGG welcoming to everyone, and since I&#8217;m privy to this subject matter, I know firsthand that this is not friendly content, and incredibly triggering, put in front of some of the population that visits BGG.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Board game and video game news and reviews website <a href=\"https:\/\/gametrodon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Gametrodon<\/a> reached out to Falling Whale for examples of the ads it was hoping to run, <a href=\"https:\/\/gametrodon.com\/possess-me-satan-banner-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">and has compiled the images it was sent here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falling Whale&#8217;s shared email <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/boardgames\/comments\/1ti33vd\/tried_advertising_on_boardgamegeek_and_got_this\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">blew up on Reddit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/thread\/3711200\/article\/47702972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the BoardGameGeek forums<\/a> and other social media yesterday, and within six hours BGG had fired Krizan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A statement from BGG founder Scott Alden <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/thread\/3711268\/update-regarding-bgg-advertising-manager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">posted on the site&#8217;s forums<\/a> said, &#8220;Due to a situation in which BGG&#8217;s Advertising Manager responded inappropriately in a business email to a designer, I have decided to let him go.
