{"id":698,"date":"2023-07-10T15:35:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T14:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=698"},"modified":"2023-10-14T11:22:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T10:22:33","slug":"gaming-website-giant-kotaku-just-lost-its-board-games-writer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/10\/gaming-website-giant-kotaku-just-lost-its-board-games-writer\/","title":{"rendered":"Major gaming website Kotaku just lost its board games writer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/\">Kotaku<\/a>, one of the biggest video gaming websites in the world, has just lost its board game writer Luke Plunkett after more than 16 years with the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia-based Plunkett, whose last day will be Friday July 14, writes almost the entirety of Kotaku&#8217;s board game reviews and news, alongside his coverage of the video games industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The veteran reporter leaves Kotaku amid the latest backlash from employees of parent business G\/O Media, which also owns sites including Gizmodo, The Onion, Deadspin and AV Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Private equity-owned G\/O took control of the suite of websites in 2019 following former parent Gawker&#8217;s bankruptcy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within a year the company had lost a string of high-profile staff including Kotaku&#8217;s Jason Schreier, now at Bloomberg, and Deadspin editor Megan Greenwell, following management diktats about content and arguments around the sites&#8217; editorial independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent clash with staff came just over a week ago, when G\/O began testing AI-written content on its websites, which were immediately condemned for being riddled with errors and full of repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-699\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Great-Air-Race.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit: Stonehand Games<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plunkett was among G\/O staff on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukePlunkett\/status\/1676713093127376896?s=20\">who highlighted issues with G\/O&#8217;s incorporation of AI<\/a>, although he has not said whether the issue directly led to his leaving Kotaku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His recent articles have included coverage of the Quackalope and Aeon Trespass: Odyssey altercation, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/21\/exclusive-quackalopes-emails-to-aeon-trespass-odyssey-devs-offering-to-scrap-frustrating-experience-coverage-in-return-for-discounted-7500-sponsorship\/\">which BoardGameWire exclusively reported on in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reviews written by Plunkett in recent years include Frostpunk: The Board Game, Dune Imperium, Undaunted Normandy and Company of Heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plunkett is also a board game designer, having created The Great Air Race through Stonehand Games. Plunkett, who describes the game as Porco Rosso meets Mario Kart, told BoardGameWire he is still looking for a publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His announcement about leaving Kotaku, which he posted on Twitter, said, &#8220;Feels weird to be writing one of these finally but&#8230; after almost 17 years it&#8217;s time for me to say goodbye to the very good website kotaku dot com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My last day will be next Friday, July 14 (Aus time).
