{"id":873,"date":"2023-10-04T10:33:54","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T09:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/?p=873"},"modified":"2023-10-04T10:36:23","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T09:36:23","slug":"planet-unknown-beats-dorfromantik-heat-to-win-germanys-biggest-board-game-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/04\/planet-unknown-beats-dorfromantik-heat-to-win-germanys-biggest-board-game-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Planet Unknown beats Dorfromantik, Heat to win Germany&#8217;s biggest board game prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/258779\/planet-unknown\">Planet Unknown<\/a>, the tile-laying planetary development and colonisation game from Ryan Lambert and Adam Rehberg, has triumphed in this year&#8217;s Deutscher Spiele Preis &#8211; Germany\u2019s biggest board gaming award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/370591\/dorfromantik-board-game\">Dorfromantik: The Board Game<\/a>, which pipped Planet Unknown to the Spiel des Jahres award just over two months ago, came in second place, while hugely popular vintage motor racing game <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/366013\/heat-pedal-metal\">Heat: Pedal to the Metal<\/a> finished third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/367206\/mysterium-kids-captain-echos-treasure\">Mysterium Kids<\/a> took first place in the children&#8217;s games category, doubling down on its Kinderspiel des Jahres win against the same competitors in <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgameversion\/600016\/german-edition\">Gigamon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/351937\/carla-caramel\">Carla Caramel.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other nominees for the main Deutscher Spiele Preis were <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamewire.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/19\/i-almost-lost-my-lunch-earth-publisher-conor-mcgoey-on-managing-one-of-2023s-biggest-board-game-success\/\">Earth<\/a>, Marrakesh, Next Station London, Tiletum, Woodcraft, Challengers! and Hitster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deutscher Spiele Preis has been awarded to Germany&#8217;s best board game since 1990, and unlike the Spiel des Jahres is voted on by the general public across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While nominally a \u2018family games\u2019 award, the winning games have varied heavily in complexity and play time over the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent previous winners have included The Lost Ruins of Arnak, The Crew, Wingspan, Azul, Terraforming Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Runaway success&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/342942\/ark-nova\">Ark Nova<\/a>&nbsp;triumphed in last year\u2019s awards, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/354886\/quacks-co-quedlinburg-dash\">Quacks and Co: Quedlinburg Dash<\/a>&nbsp;winning the best children\u2019s game prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award winners were revealed this morning at this year&#8217;s Essen Spiel game fair.
