Invincible: The Card Game is coming to Kickstarter as Indie Boards & Cards signs multi-year licensing deal with Skybound Tabletop

Coup and The Resistance publisher Indie Boards & Cards has picked up the rights to make a series of co-op deckbuilding games based on the Invincible superhero franchise, after signing a multi-year licensing deal with Skybound Tabletop.

IBC will base the games on its Aeon’s End and Astro Knights game systems, with the first in the series – Invincible: The Card Game – due to launch onto Kickstarter on October 8.

Invincible has gone from strength to strength in recent years, having begun life in 2003 as a comic series written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

His company Skybound Entertainment expanded the setting into TV in 2021 through an Amazon Prime Video series, which has so far been renewed to cover four seasons, while a crowdfund for a AAA video game based on Invincible raised more than $680,000 earlier this year.

Reaching that total for Invincible: The Card Game would give IBC the biggest crowdfund in its 12-year history.

The company previously raised just over $673,000 for its largest Kickstarter project to date, with over 5,800 people backing Aeon’s End: Legacy of Gravehold in 2021.

Its sister business Stronghold Games, which IBC merged with in 2018, has several $1bn-plus Kickstarter projects under its belt, including $2.7m for the Terraforming Mars Big Box in 2020.

Skybound has strong form when it comes to powerful Kickstarter campaigns, having raised more than $3.5m for Trial by Trolley, a party game based on the Cyanide and Happiness webcomic, in 2020.

Its other previous campaigns include Valor & Villainy crowdfunds for Minions of Mordak and Lludwik’s Labyrinth, which raised over $310,000 and more than $550,000 respectively.

The IBC deal is not Skybound’s first foray in bringing Invincible to the tabletop. The company teamed with Mantic Games for Invincible: The Dice Game last year, and released Invincible: The Hero-Building Game in July in partnership with Dire Wolf Digital.

Garima Sharma, VP of licensing at Skybound Entertainment, said, “We are committed to expanding the Invincible franchise through unique product offerings and we’re so excited to work with Indie Boards & Cards to offer an entirely new Invincible experience with this immersive card game.

“Indie Boards & Games is one of the best in the business, and I’m looking forward to our multi-year partnership!”

Travis Worthington, CEO of Indie Boards & Cards, added, “We’re thrilled to partner with Skybound to bring Invincible: The Card Game to life.

“Skybound has consistently set the bar with its exceptional IP, and we have long admired their ability to create compelling and immersive worlds.

“Working alongside them to translate the Invincible universe into a dynamic tabletop experience is an incredible opportunity, and we’re excited to deliver something truly special for fans.”

Indie Boards & Cards launched in 2009, and scored big successes with bluffing and deduction card games The Resistance in 2009 and The Resistance: Avalon and Coup in 2012.

The company merged with Terraforming Mars publisher Stronghold Games in 2018 to create Indie Game Studios, although both brands have continued to operate under their existing names since.
